Messier is a New York wildlife artist known primarily for his paintings of waterfowl and other wildlife. He studied commercial art at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York, under Professor Robert Benney, and began his career as a freelance illustrator while continuing to paint landscapes and New England scenes.
His work appeared in Outdoor Life and Field & Stream. Messier was also commissioned by Outdoor Life to design a plaque presented as an award to former President Ronald Reagan. His early interest in wildlife was influenced by a family background of hunting and fishing, and he later devoted much of his work to subjects drawn from those experiences. His paintings range from North American waterfowl and upland birds to Western wildlife and landscapes, often emphasizing animals in their natural environments. Messier participated in exhibitions of sporting and wildlife art throughout his career, including the Decoys & Wildlife GalleryÕs 2000 miniature exhibition.
