Description
This color offset lithograph after an original painting by Montague Dawson depicts a naval battle titled The Action between Java and Constitution, December 1812. The scene illustrates the engagement between the HMS Java and the USS Constitution during the War of 1812 amidst heavy seas and cannon smoke. The work is signed in the plate at the lower left as MONTAGUE DAWSON (photo 3) and bears the printed name Montague Dawson in the center of the lower white margin (photo 6). The upper margin is printed with text reading Published in 1966 by Frost & Reed Ltd. of Bristol & London, E (photo 7) and Copyright in all countries including the U.S.A. (Printed in England.) (photo 8). A small printed copyright mark reading ? F & R 1966 is located within the lower left of the image field (photo 6). The print is housed in a decorative gilt and dark-toned wooden frame with a textured green fabric mat and a gold-finish inner fillet. 40.5x31
