Gaston Lachaise's Woman (Woman Arranging Hair) [LF 7] is one of twenty-five small figures modeled and first cast in bronze between 1906, when he arrived in America from his native France, and 1917, when he was completing work in New York in 1917 for his first exhibition, held in that city in February-March 1918, and which immediately brought him fame. The model is known to have been made before August 1913, when it was photographed by Lachaise in his studio in New York City. The first bronze cast, made in about 1917, is now owned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Another early cast may have been produced, although its present whereabouts is unknown. Three casts were made between 1956 and 1961. The Lachaise Foundation, which was established in 1963 and administers the artist's estate, issued an edition of eleven Estate casts from the artist's model, but later reduced the number to nine, and then to seven. The first in the edition, made in 1963, was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1967, and recently deaccessioned. The cast made in 1961 was designated as the second in the edition. The present cast, the third in the edition and produced in 1982, is one of the three Estate casts acquired by a grandfather of the consignors between 1986 and 1990 for each of his children.
