Lalla Essaydi was born 1956 in Marrakesh, Morocco and her photographic practice employs imagery drawn directly from personal history to explore female identity within Islamic culture. She received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/TUFTS University in May of 2003 and her works can be found held in numerous collections, including the Williams College Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Fries Museum, the Netherlands, and The Kodak Museum of Art. Essaydi revisits her childhood growing up in Morocco through her artistic practice and more broadly addresses women's place within the architecture of Islamic society, bringing these under-represented experiences into the light. In the same breadth, Essaydi goes beyond the exploration of Arab identity to confront the Western fantasy found within Orientalism and expressed through the imagery of the Odalisque, the veil, and the harem. Working across painting, video, film, installation, and analog photography, her incorporation of traditional academic art such as calligraphy, mosaic and architecture is juxtaposed against Essaydi's use of henna, female presence, gaze and dress. These themes and techniques come together to produce a final work that confronts the complexity of intersectional identity.
