A Pioneer of Holography, Harriet Casdin-Silver is known for her numerous contributions to the development of installation and technological art throughout the 60s and on. Her contributions to the field of holography are robust and she was the first to develop frontal-projection holograms, the first to explore white light transmission multi-colored holograms, and the first to exhibit outdoor, solar-tracked holograms. Casdin-Silver continued to grow with the technology, and soon began to incorporate the human figure. Her work explores feminist issues and ideas surrounding age, beauty and death. She attended the University of Vermont, Columbia University, the New School for Social Research, and Cambridge Goddard Graduate School. The two present works offered in the auction are from the collection of Norman & Myrna Katz. The broader collection includes artists whose hyper realist techniques are accompanied with a surrealist quality, masterful ability and thought-provoking subjects. The works of Casdin-Silver may, at first glance, stand out against the pool of realist painters and sculptures within their collection but upon further examination it is clear there is a honest and genuine quality that can be found throughout. As we see in 'Self Portrait at 57', Gillespie takes an alternative route than his Valley Realist School peers in presenting a truthful depiction of himself as he ages. This too can be said for the works of Casdin-Silver, who is also presenting more truthful depictions of women as they age to provide a counter to our contemporary aesthetics of beauty.
