Sir Francis Cook, 4th Baronet (1907-1978) was an artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere; he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists, making Jersey his home from 1948. His friendship with other artists of his time accounts for many of the 20th Century paintings in the collection, probably acquired as gifts or by exchange. The present work is a study for The Labourers, 1898, John Arnesby Brown's principal Royal Academy exhibit of that year. A further study of the white horse depicted here, now in the collection of Falmouth Art Gallery, has been identified as part of the same group of preparatory works. The Labourers is recorded in the Royal Academy Pictures album of 1898 (p. 187), where it is reproduced in black and white. Both studies are thought to have been executed in Cornwall, in the vicinity of Lelant and St Ives, where Brown was based from the 1890s. Brown's sustained engagement with the region contributed to the growing national prominence of the St Ives artistic community. He served as President of the St Ives Arts Club in 1904 and continued to spend his winters in the area for many years.
