About the artist

Marcel Jacque (1906–1981), born in Vienna, Austria, was a French painter, etcher, and draftsman best known for his work associated with the Barbizon School. He worked in Barbizon, France, a village that became central to the development of plein air painting and landscape art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Jacque's artistic practice encompassed painting, etching, and drawing, with a focus on landscape subjects in the tradition of the Barbizon School. He worked directly from nature, capturing the forests and rural scenes surrounding Barbizon. His technique reflected the school's emphasis on naturalistic observation and atmospheric effects. Jacque continued the legacy of earlier Barbizon masters while developing his own approach to landscape representation.

Marcel Jacque was one of the founders of the Musée des Peintres de Barbizon, contributing to the preservation and promotion of the school's heritage. His work is held in the collection of the Musée départemental de l'École de Barbizon. Through his artistic output and institutional involvement, Jacque played a role in maintaining the cultural significance of Barbizon as an artistic center well into the twentieth century.
