Lucebert (1924-1994)
Lucebert (luce = light, bert = bright) was the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk. This poet - also active as a visual artist - was born in 1924 in Amsterdam. In the 1950s, he acted as the foreman of the Beweging van Vijftig, the group of experimental poets that caused a stir at the time.

About the artist

Lucebert (1924–1994), born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was a Dutch poet and visual artist best known for his work in the CoBrA movement and as a leading figure of the Beweging van Vijftig. Born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, he adopted the pseudonym Lucebert, combining the Latin word for light with the Dutch word for bright. He joined the CoBrA movement in 1949, where his spontaneous and experimental approach connected his visual art with his literary work.

Lucebert's visual practice was characterized by a spontaneous, expressionistic style featuring mythical creatures and childlike figures. His paintings, drawings, and prints reflected the experimental spirit of CoBrA, emphasizing direct expression and rejecting academic conventions. His work as a poet and visual artist were closely intertwined, both exploring themes of freedom and imagination. In the 1950s, he became the leading voice of the Vijftigers, a group of experimental poets who challenged traditional Dutch literature.

Lucebert's work is held in major Dutch collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Amstelveen, and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The Stedelijk Museum organized a major retrospective of his work in 1987. The Cobra Museum has exhibited his work extensively, including the 2021 exhibition dedicated to his early CoBrA period. His dual achievements in poetry and visual art established him as a significant figure in postwar Dutch culture.
