About the artist

Anton Erkelens (1885–1956), born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was a Dutch painter and draughtsman best known for his landscapes and cityscapes. He lived and worked in Eibergen, Veere from 1922 to 1931, and Amsterdam, among other places. Erkelens was a member of the artists' association Vereeniging Sint Lucas in Amsterdam.

Erkelens painted and drew landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes. His work focused particularly on Dutch subjects, with views of harbours and towns forming a significant part of his output. During his extended stay in Veere, he concentrated on Zeeland scenes, capturing the character of the coastal town and its surroundings. His approach to these subjects was naturalistic, documenting the places where he lived and worked.

Erkelens participated in group exhibitions as a member of Vereeniging Sint Lucas. His work appears regularly at Dutch auctions, where his paintings of Veere and harbour scenes attract consistent interest from collectors. Documentation of his career is preserved in Scheen's Lexicon and the archives of the RKD, Netherlands Institute for Art History.
