Drawings, in pencil, interspersed with watercolours. And always refined, very contently drawn or brushed with sometimes awfully thin brushes. Eindhoven-based artist Ank Overweel excelled with her refined handwriting.
Overweel got to know art through her father, a rather deserving amateur painter. At the MMS (secondary school for girls) she was taught drawing by Karel Vermeeren and at the Academy for Industrial Design (predecessor Design Academy) she was taught the trade by Kees Bol and Jan Gregoor, among others. After the academy, the young Overweel became a designer of curtain fabrics at textile printer Swinkels in Geldrop, and later became an autonomous visual artist. Important in this was his marriage in 1968 to Thijs Vossen, director of cultural centre and art loan De Krabbedans, among others.

About the artist

Anna Elisabeth Maria Overweel (1943–2019), born in Breda, the Netherlands, was a Dutch visual artist best known for her refined drawings and watercolours. She received her formative training from Karel Vermeeren at the MMS secondary school for girls, and later studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven, the predecessor of Design Academy Eindhoven, under Kees Bol and Jan Gregoor, among others. Her early introduction to art came through her father, an accomplished amateur painter, whose influence shaped her lifelong dedication to the medium.

Overweel's artistic practice was characterized by meticulous pencil drawings interspersed with delicate watercolours, executed with exceptionally fine brushes. After her studies, she initially worked as a designer of curtain fabrics at textile printer Swinkels in Geldrop before transitioning to autonomous visual art. Her marriage in 1968 to Thijs Vossen, director of cultural centre and art loan De Krabbedans, connected her more deeply to Eindhoven's vibrant art community. Her work encompassed meditative still lifes and landscapes, rendered with a refined, contemplative touch that became her signature.

Overweel's work is held in several public collections, including the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Province of Noord-Brabant, and the Municipality of Eindhoven. She exhibited at Cultureel Centrum De Krabbedans and was represented by Galerie Willy Schoots in Eindhoven. In 1993, she presented a duo exhibition with her husband at Museum Kempenland in Eindhoven. Her legacy rests in the quiet mastery of her draftsmanship and the contemplative quality of her imagery, which captured the essence of the Dutch drawing and watercolour tradition.
