About the artist

Franz Kline (1910–1962), born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was an American painter best known for his work in the Abstract Expressionist movement. He is associated with the action painters of the New York School, an informal group that included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, John Ferren, and Lee Krasner, as well as local poets, dancers, and musicians. Kline explored the same innovations to painting as the other artists in this group during the 1940s and 1950s.

Kline became known for his large-scale, dynamic paintings characterized by bold, gestural brushwork. His work was initially dominated by black and white compositions that emphasized the physical act of painting. Around 1955, he reintroduced color into his practice. His approach to abstraction focused on the expressive potential of line and form, creating compositions that balanced spontaneity with structural clarity.

Kline participated in the influential Ninth Street Show in 1951, a key moment for Abstract Expressionism organized by the artists themselves with assistance from Leo Castelli. He held important solo exhibitions at the Egan Gallery and later at the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. His work was the subject of major retrospective exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1968 and the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1985.
