About the artist
Anja Luithle (born 1968), born in Germany, is a German artist best known for her kinetic sculptures and installations. She studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 1988 to 1995 under professors Dieter Groß, Sotirios Michou, and Joseph Kosuth, obtaining her first state examination in art education. In 1990, she was a guest student at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona under Joan Hernández Pijuan.
Luithle creates kinetic sculptures and installations that explore themes of clothing, the absence of the body, movement, and the cultural coding of female roles. Her work investigates the relationship between garments and identity, using motion to animate forms that suggest human presence while remaining empty. The sculptures often employ textiles and mechanical elements to create dynamic pieces that shift between stillness and movement.
Her work is held in public collections including the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands, the Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, and the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart in Germany. Luithle has exhibited extensively in solo exhibitions at venues such as the Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, Kunstverein Heidenheim, and Museum Ritter. She received a grant from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg in 1996 and the prize of the Städtische Galerie Ostfildern in 2000. Since 2019, she has been teaching at the Free Art Academy Nürtingen.
