Perhaps best known for his provocative 1970s performance pieces that challenged the limits of mental and physical capacity and reality, Chris Burden is one of the most celebrated conceptual artists in contemporary art history. In his sculptural practice, Burden was interested in the way that sculpture could intervene in and affect public space, often creating monumental pieces referencing public infrastructure constructions and their parallel functions. Viagra Tower, executed in 2011, stems from a series of replicas the artist created of bridges, buildings and other architectural structures. Replicating the Eiffel Tower, which was built in 1889 in advance of Paris hosting the World Fair, this work underlines the way these structures, like sculpture or art more broadly, can be used to exert power and influence. The subtle message is communicated through humor and wit by way of the work's title, alluding to this show of public force by tying it to a drug linked to performance and masculinity.
