Retna, also known as Marquis Lewis, is well-known in the street and contemporary art scene. He first gained recognition for his unique and large-scale geometric murals that adorned the streets of Los Angeles. Later, his works made the transition into more traditional gallery settings. Retna's practice blends different visual styles and languages, such as Gothic blackletter, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, symbols, and elements from urban culture, to create captivating compositions. He blends these diverse mediums, techniques, and visual vocabularies to explore cultures' interconnectedness in the hopes of developing a universal visual language.
