Cats occupied a singular place in the art and imagination of Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (Japanese/French, 1886-1968). Throughout his career, the Japanese-born artist returned to the feline form with remarkable consistency, finding in its graceful movements and expressive character the ideal vehicle through which to unite the refined traditions of Japanese ink painting with the modern sensibility of the School of Paris. By the mid-1930s, Foujita had established an international reputation as one of the leading figures of the École de Paris. His depictions of cats had become highly sought after, celebrated for their ability to convey both anatomical accuracy and distinct personality. Unlike the highly polished oil portraits for which he became famous, his ink and watercolor studies reveal the spontaneity of an artist whose draftsmanship was rooted equally in Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
