Norman and Myrna Katz Collection, Massachusetts. Chicago native Joseph Seigenthaler exhibited his life- sized figurative sculptures for over 30 years. Seigenthaler was born 1939 in Nashville, Tennessee and earned his BFA in painting from the Memphis College of Art in 1981. He went on to continue his study in ceramic art at the Appalachian Center for Craft from 1984-1986 where he was exposed to the versatility of fired clay and in 1990 Seigenthaler received his MFA from Northern Illinois University. After graduating Seigenthaler began his artistic career as a freelance sculptor producing sculptures of important public figures for wax museums, most notable the Music Valley Wax Museum in Nashville and the Country Music Wax Museum in Tamworth, Australia. This time was a pivotal point in Seigenthaler's career and allowed him to develop his technical process which later allowed him to create large scale figures. Seigenthaler has left his mark on many students teaching figurative clay and sculpture at the University of Montana, Missoula, Harold Washington College in Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL. Seigenthaler married French painter Anne Gilbert who he shared three daughters with. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections including in the permanent collections of the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Racine Art Museum, Racine, Wisconsin, the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan and Museo de Escultura Figurativa Internacional Contemporánea, Spain. The present work is part of the collection of Norman and Mryna Katz featured in the auction. This collection includes artists whose hyper realist techniques are accompanied with a surrealist quality.
