Born in 1949 in Exeter, New Hampshire, Scott Prior received his BFA in printmaking from the the University of Massachusetts in 1971. Since then Prior has lived and worked in Northampton, Massachusetts, where, alongside his Valley Realist school peers, he produces hyper-realist compositions with a contemporary Americana feeling. Prior focuses on the local, mundane human experience, elevating both the intimacy and grandeur of everyday life through luminous light and careful, attentive treatments of his subjects. Prior has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, the St. Botolph Club Foundation, and has had multiple residencies at the MacDowell Colony. His works can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University; and the New Britain Museum of American Art.
