Issued in Japan during the late Tokugawa period, this copper 4 Mon Bunkyu Eiho belongs to the final generation of traditional cast cash coinage before Japan adopted modern machine-struck yen and sen currency. Introduced in 1863 during the Bunkyu era and produced through 1868, the type was intended to replace unpopular iron 4 Mon issues and was largely manufactured from remelted older copper 1 Mon coins. This example is the Regular Script variety, traditionally associated with production at the Edo Fukagawa Shinden minting facilities, and features the characteristic square central hole with the denomination inscription on the obverse and an 11-wave reverse design. The coin is struck in copper, with the type having a standard weight of approximately 3.10 grams, diameter of about 27 mm and thickness near 1.2 mm. Bunkyu Eiho occupies an important place in Japanese monetary history as the last major traditional cast cash series introduced before the rapid modernization of the Meiji era and the transition to Western-style machine-struck coinage. Dark brown aged patina with areas of green surface oxidation and scattered scratches and handling marks consistent with prolonged circulation and age.
