The first two plates record the last days of the Earl of Strafford, who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland during the reign of Charles I. He was put on trial for high treason by enemies of the King, who was unable to save his trusted advisor from execution. The fact that these events were recorded in print underline the turbulence of the times. The other plates are architectural studies for which the artist is well known. The interior view of St Paul's Cathedral is a particularly important record of the old church before it burnt down in 1666.
