The image was produced after a wall painting commissioned by Sir Anthony Browne in 1545 for his estate at Cowdray in Sussex. He was Master of the King's horses and is shown on a white horse behind King Henry in the centre. Recognising the importance of these scenes, the Society of Antiquities commissioned James Basire to produce engravings in 1772; fortuitously, as the house burnt down in 1793.
