A Williamite engraved commemorative baluster wine glass, mid-18th century or perhaps later Probably Irish, the drawn trumpet bowl with a solid base, decorated with an equestrian portrait of the King, inscribed 'THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF KING WILLIAM' on a banner above, the reverse inscribed 'BOYNE 1ST JULY 1690' within tied branches, set on a plain cylindrical stem flanked by collars, over a conical folded foot, 16.6cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Delomosne and Son, October 1992 Private American Collection It is possible that this glass may have been engraved to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, but it is now recognised that a number of similar glasses were also produced in the late 19th century engraved by individuals including Franz Tieze. A very similar wine glass from the A C Hubbard Jr Collection is illustrated by Ward Lloyd, A Wine Lover's Glasses (2000), p.87, pl.114(a) and was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2011, lot 80.
