A remarkable Staffordshire lead-glazed creamware portrait plaque of Sir Isaac Newton, circa 1775 Of circular shape, the turned rim washed in green, the centre reserved with a square tile moulded in high relief with a portrait of the polymath, his hair, eyes, buttons and sleeves picked out in grey, florets to the corners picked out in green and grey, pierced for suspension, 23cm diam Footnotes: The mould for this plaque is derived from that used for a remarkable set of portrait tiles depicting literary, philosophical and scientific figures, including Shakespeare, Milton, Newton together with ancients from the classical world. A set of six earthenware examples, including Newton, is illustrated by Anthony Ray, 'Staffordshire Tiles 1750-1840', ECC Trans, Vol.15, Pt.2 (1994), p.198, fig.12. Ray notes that the quality of the relief decoration is exceptional, and postulates that Greatbatch or Wedgwood may have been responsible for their production.
