An important Worcester tureen cover, circa 1754 Of lobed oval shape with an elaborate rustic twig finial sprouting flowers and veined leaves, painted in blue with two porcelain bowls containing flowering peonies and prunus, a singing bird perched on each, alternating with two simple Chinese landscapes, within a detailed border of formal diaper panels, 36.2cm wide, workman's mark Footnotes: Provenance Geoffrey Godden Collection, Bonhams, 30 June 2010, lot 70 Mike Williams Collection Geoffrey Godden's hand-written collection label notes 'cover only, but what a cover!'. A second rather intriguing label adds 'a very good lady friend kept her promise over this lid'. Although the landscape vignettes closely resemble the reverse decoration from the 'Plantation' pattern, in all other respects the decoration is unrecorded and this would appear to be a unique survivor.
