An important Coalport plate painted by Thomas Baxter, dated 1809 Finely painted to the centre with an arrangement of four shells on a marbled tabletop, signed 'Baxter 1809', within a wide solid gilt band and a border of formal scrollwork and anthemions, 24cm diam Footnotes: This plate belongs to an important series with identical gilded borders and various still life subjects, all signed by Baxter and dated between 1807 and 1809. Two examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum are illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Coalport and Coalbrookdale Porcelains (1970), pl.92 and by Michael Messenger, Coalport (1995), pls.83-84 and col. pl.5. Two further examples painted with shells were sold by Phillips on 26 May 1999, lots 278 and 279.
