Two pâte-sur-pâte plaques attributed to John Cope, late 19th century Decorated in white relief on salmon-pink grounds, one of rectangular form, depicting five winged Cupids at leisure on an island, one filling a large jar by the water's edge, another with his feet submerged, surrounded by plants, monogrammed 'JC', plaque 17.5cm x 43.5cm, the other of upright rectangular form, depicting four nude putto by the waterside, one with a fishing rod, another holding a pole supporting a basket, a tree behind them, plaque 44cm x 17cm, mounted in later wooden frames (2) Footnotes: The monogram is likely to be that of John Cope, a little known artist whose work is discussed by Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte (1992), p.177. Bumpus states that ten examples of Cope's work are in the Nyman Collection, of which some are signed in full whilst others bear the monogram 'JC'. The precise location of Cope's workshop remains a mystery, it is possible that he was associated with Limoges but may have also worked in England.
