A Meissen Marcolini period blue-ground teapot and cover, circa 1795-1800 The deep blue ground reserving a large oval panel on both sides, finely painted in the manner of Johann David Schubert with classical figure subjects after Angelica Kaufmann within formal gilt borders, one side with Penelope awakened by Euryclea, the other with Diomed and Cressida, the subjects titled in black underneath the base, gilt formal borders to the rims, 12.5cm high, crossed swords mark and asterisk in underglaze-blue, impressed numerals and B (2) Footnotes: Titled in black on the underside 'Pénélope éveille par Euryclée' and 'Troilus et Cressida'. The painting 'Diomed and Cressida' (from William Shakespeare's 'Troilus and Cressida', Act V, scene ii) painted by Angelica Kauffman in 1789 is now at Petworth House, while a version of 'Penelope and Euriclea', also known as 'Penelope awakened by Euryclea with the news of Ulysses' Return', circa 1773, is at Stourhead, Wiltshire (another version seems to be in the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum, Bregenz).
