An outstanding early example of a strength-testing amusement machine, the Mills Novelty Co. Show Your Strength coin-operated floor model lifter, circa early 20th century. Impressive floor standing machine features an oak cabinet surrounded by an elaborate nickel-plated cast metal housing, dominated by the iconic Mills owl with raised "Mills Perfect Muscle Developer" lettering into the casting. The large colorful dial is illustrated with a muscular strongman and boldly titled "Show Your Strength", with graduating scores from 100 to 900, accompanied by humorous descriptions, such as "Not So Good Use Me More", "Only the Strong Deserve the Fair", and "Great Stuff BIG BOY!". Beneath the dial is a beautiful blue and white porcelain instruction plate, reading "Test Your Strength Drop Penny in the Slot". The textured foot platforms and central lifting mechanism are original to the machine and nickel-plated cast metal. The player stands on the platform, deposits a penny, and pulls upward on the large double handles, with his lifting strength registered on the upper dial. CONDITION: Oak cabinet may have had an early restoration. Cabinet and components are in excellent plus condition, consistent with age and use. A particularly handsome and elaborate example of early American coin-operated amusement equipment.
