A Queen Anne figured walnut and featherbanded cabinet on chest Circa 1710, possibly by John Coxed The moulded cornice above a pair of half veneered doors, enclosing a total of fourteen oak lined drawers comprised of two banks of four graduated drawers, over one long central drawer flanked by two pull-out compartments, each compartment housing two short drawers, with a reverse ogee waist moulding below, above two short and two long graduated drawers, on later bracket feet, shrinkage splits down the centre of the two doors, originally on bun feet, 121cm wide x 56cm deep x 172.5cm high, (47 1/2in wide x 22in deep x 67 1/2in high) Footnotes: Two comparable walnut cabinets-on-chests to the present lot, albeit ones with secretaire drawers unlike the offered example, are illustrated in A. Bowett, English Furniture, 1660-1714, 2002, Woodbridge, pl.'s 7:59 & 7:60, p. 226. As with the above, they were made in circa 1710. However, we know that John Coxed was the cabinet maker responsible for these two related pieces since both bear his firm's historic trade label. Two further models worthy of note appear in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, fig.'s 237 and 250, pp.'s 154 & 161. The first one featured therein also encloses a Coxed label, whilst the second in fact has a Coxed and Woster trade label, suggesting that this latter is of a slightly later (circa 1720) date than the others. Interestingly, the upper section of three of these referenced cabinets enclose a similar configuration of drawers to that inside the present lot.
