A Regence ormolu mounted rosewood and tulipwood commode Circa 1730 but extensively or fundamentally restored With quarter veneered tablets and similarly veneered bandings, with walnut and elm lined drawers, the moulded marble top above two short and two long tablet inlaid drawers interspersed with brass flute mounted rails, flanked by faun mask, scrolled acanthus, laurel leaf pendant, shell, beaded foliate and c-scroll cast angle clasps, over a shaped apron mounted with a Zephyr mask flanked by scrolled acanthus adornments, on splayed support, the carcass top stamped with a grouping of three fleur-de-lys, with indications of significant restoration including internal elements such as drawer bases, possibly partially re-mounted, 131cm wide x 62.5cm deep x 91cm high, (51 1/2in wide x 24 1/2in deep x 35 1/2in high) Footnotes: The three small grouped 'fleur-de-lys' which appear impressed into the carcass top of the present lot possibly means that this once formed part of the French 18th century Royal collection. However equally this stamp could be some type of ebeniste's guild registration mark. A closely comparable Regence commode, which was essentially attributed to the ebeniste Francois Mondon and dated circa 1725, sold Christie's, London, 4 June 2014, The European Connoisseur, lot 606. Another very similar example, with virtually identical opposing female bust mounts as appear on the offered lot as well as the aforementioned, had previously sold Christie's, London, 11 September 2008, lot 150. Francois Mondon (1694-1770) is known to have collaborated and supplied furniture to the renowned marchand-ebeniste Pierre II Migeon, and it is important to note that a related commode by Migeon which features the same distinctive mounts again, is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIeme Siecle, 2002, Paris, fig. A, p. 618. A further model worthy of comparison is stamped for Mondon and appears in a later edition of the same book, P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XIIIeme Siecle, 1989, Paris, fig. A, p. 584.
