An early Victorian figured walnut, tulipwood crossbanded, ebonised, stained fruitwood and marquetry breakfast or centre table Circa 1840, possibly originally retailed by Edward Holmes Baldock With boxwood stringing, the circular quarter veneered tilt-top inlaid with an interlacing scrolled ribbon surround and a shaped border comprised of alternating ribbon tied floral pendants with tasselled ribbon tied foliate swags, on a triform baluster shaped and concave-sided column, the flared and shaped base with three hipped downswept legs terminating in scroll-form feet and recessed brass castors, 122cm wide x 121cm deep x 72.5cm high, (48in wide x 47 1/2in deep x 28 1/2in high) Footnotes: Among the various related marquetry breakfast tables, which have appeared at auction in recent years, the following are notable examples; one sold Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, Important English Furniture, lot 157; another sold Bonhams, Los Angeles, 3 December 2012, English Furniture and Works of Art, lot 56; and a further version which sold Bonhams, London, 21 June 2016, lot 233. However, the closest comparable precedent to the offered lot is arguably a model which sold Bonhams, London, 19 October 2011, Fine English Furniture, lot 228. The present table, as with the aforementioned, is illustrative of the Louis XV style which flourished, and was widely favoured, over the course of the second quarter of the 19th century in Britain, but especially in England. This French taste was championed by Edward Holmes Baldock, one of the most important and prominent marchand merciers, whose activities were located at Hanway Street, in London. Evidently one of Baldock's preferences, certainly in his intermediary role as part of affluent and often influential clients' major commissions, was in his use of craftsmen and experts who specialised in areas such as marquetry. In essence, the true talent of Baldock, and indeed other first rate marchand merciers just like him, was in their ability at selecting furniture made by the most prominent and skilful cabinet makers of their day, executed in the most fashionable contemporary styles. In the case of Baldock, this approach meant that he developed a significant relationship with the Blake family of artists.
