A French mid 19th century ormolu mounted tulipwood, ebonised, stained sycamore and fruitwood marquetry necessaire a ouvrage or dressing/work table by Francois Richstaedt Marked for Richstaedt and dated: 1849 The hinged shaped top inlaid with an assorted floral wreath within a shaped tablet, encompassed by a scrolled cartouche, the acanthus, scrolled berried foliate and bellflower inlaid surround with flowerhead embedded trellis work angles, the top with a mirrored underside, above an interlaced strapwork inlaid frieze, over a shaped apron incorporating a work slide, on cabriole legs, with an ink stamp which reads: 'Exposition 1849, RICHSTAEDT, Ebeniste, Boulevard Beaumarchais, 26, Paris', 63cm wide x 45cm deep x 73cm high, (24 1/2in wide x 17 1/2in deep x 28 1/2in high) Footnotes: Francois Richstaedt is recorded in 1846 as a cabinet maker with premises on 8 Boulevard Beaumarchais, Paris. Already by 1850 it is documented that Richstaedt had moved to number 26 on the same street. However it is interesting to note that the present lot is marked with the latter address, even though dating to 1849, so clearly this slight relocation had actually happened prior to that mid century point. As referenced in the stamp on the offered table, Richstaedt participated in the Exposition Nationale of 1849. And evidently this piece formed part of the furniture he exhibited there. Some years later, his firm also took part in the Exposition Universelle which occurred in 1867. See D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Francais du XIXeme Siecle, 1989, Paris, p. 554.
