An early Victorian gilt bronze mounted tulipwood and purplewood low display cabinet 'a l'anglaise' Mid 19th century, very likely made by one of the London based Blake family of cabinet makers, with the underside of some mounts inscribed: 'Blake' and also numbered Of inverted breakfront outline, with a moulded marble inset top above a gilt bronze acanthus-and-husk moulded edge, over a scrolled foliate pattern mounted frieze, with one large central and two smaller quarter veneered tablet inlaid and stiff-leaf panel mounted doors, enclosing now void interiors, flanked by convex ends with two later glass shelves, with mirrored backs, interspersed by six acanthus capped and clasped scrolled corbel and oak-leaf pendant cast angles, on a quarter veneered tablet inlaid plinth base, some mounts appear to be later casts, 244cm wide x 56cm deep x 98cm high, (96in wide x 22in deep x 38 1/2in high) Footnotes: The above lot is illustrative of the Louis XVI style which flourished, and was widely favoured, over the course of the second and third quarters of the 19th century in Britain, but especially in England. This French taste was championed by cabinet makers such as Robert Blake (and later his four sons, Charles, Henry, George and James) and Edward Holmes Baldock, two of the most important and prominent marchand merciers, whose activities were located at 8 Stephen Street, Tottenham Court Road and Hanway Street, in London.
