A monumental bespoke white marble fireplace surround of exceptional quality, commissioned as a one-off for a prestigious London townhouse and never installed.

Executed in the classical manner, the substantial moulded mantel is supported by opposing full-length sculptural figures, depicting a classical maiden adorned with vine leaves and grapes and a bearded male figure holding a classical urn.
Both are finely carved with flowing drapery and stand upon tapering architectural supports, lending the surround impressive sculptural presence.

The entablature is richly decorated with scrolling acanthus ornament, stylised anthemion motifs and finely carved floral paterae, centred by an elegant floral rosette framed by foliate scrollwork.
The restrained architectural proportions are complemented by crisp mouldings throughout, while the marble displays subtle natural grey veining typical of fine white marble.

Carved from solid white marble, the surround is constructed in eleven individual sections, including the mantel shelf and hearth, allowing for transportation and professional installation.
The overall quality of carving is excellent, with crisp detail throughout and an impressive scale suited to a grand reception room, drawing room, entrance hall or luxury contemporary residence.

Although produced in the late 20th century, the fireplace faithfully reflects the elegance and craftsmanship of Renaissance and Neoclassical architectural design, making it an impressive focal point for both period and modern interiors.

Condition

Very good overall condition.
Light surface wear, minor nibbles and small handling marks commensurate with storage.
