The Queen was born on the feast day of Saint Catherine, and portraying her in the guise of the saint soon became a fashionable way for female courtiers to signal their loyalty and respect. Catherine of Braganza favoured the Flemish painter Jacob Huysmans over the more prominent court artist Peter Lely, perhaps as a way of distancing herself from her husband's mistress, Barbara Villiers, who was closely associated with Lely.
