About the artist

Wilhelmus Josephus Antonius Vaessen (1943–2011), born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, was a Dutch painter and printmaker best known for his work in figurative expressionism. He studied from 1960 to 1965 at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam, later known as the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and was primarily active in The Hague.

Vaessen's work is characterized by a vigorous, impasto application of paint. His subjects include landscapes, interiors, and figures, rendered with expressive brushwork. He worked in both painting and printmaking, producing etchings early in his career around 1965. His figurative approach combined direct observation with a bold, gestural technique that emphasized the materiality of paint.

Vaessen was a member of the artists' association Pulchri Studio in The Hague. His work is held in several public collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Dutch National Collection managed by the Cultural Heritage Agency, and the art collection of the Municipality of The Hague managed by Stroom Den Haag. Following his death in 2011, a memorial exhibition was held at Pulchri Studio.
