About the artist
Bernardus Johannes van Efferen (1934–2011), born in The Hague, the Netherlands, was a Dutch etcher, graphic artist, and painter. Van Efferen worked across multiple disciplines, including etching, engraving, wood engraving, lithography, drawing, and painting.
Van Efferen's artistic practice was characterized by planar division and the distortion of reality, reflecting the influence of his teacher Paul Citroen. He explored both figurative and non-figurative subjects throughout his career, including self-portraits and figure compositions. His technical versatility allowed him to work in various printmaking techniques, demonstrating a sustained engagement with graphic media alongside his painting practice.
Van Efferen was a member of the Haagsche Kunstkring and maintained strong ties to the artistic community in The Hague throughout his career. His work is represented in the Dutch national collection, managed by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. Van Efferen remained active in The Hague until his death in 2011, contributing to the city's rich tradition of graphic arts and printmaking.
