Fritz Rahmann 1936-2006
Fritz Rahmann (1936-2006) studied art at Düsseldorf Academy and architecture at TU Aachen. He lived and worked in the Netherlands for many years, until he moved to West Berlin in the late 1970s.
There he founded the group ‘Büro Berlin’ with Hermann Pitz and Raimund Kummer, whose installation works in public spaces questioned the commercialisation of art in the museum environment and the socio-political role of the artist. Rahmann later passed on this approach, which influenced both him and those around him, to his students at the Faculty of Design at the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (now Bauhaus University) in Weimar, where he was Professor of Visual Arts from 1993 to 2001.
Rahmann's artistic work, which includes not only situational, temporary installations in public spaces, but also graphics, photographs, paintings and objects made in his studio, is subject to the demand for systematic reorganisation. With a few non-provocative interventions, he changes existing situations, creating a new perspective that challenges the original perception. In 1987, for example, for the Skulptur.Projekte Münster, he proposed a random lighting system in the station passageway ‘Hamburger Tunnel’, which was supposed to transform a boring tunnel into a more enjoyable place.

In 1993, Fritz Rahmann was appointed professor at the Faculty of Design at the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (now Bauhaus University Weimar) . In 2001, he became professor emeritus.

About the artist

Fritz Rahmann (1936–2006), born in Germany, was a German artist best known for his installation works in public spaces and his critical approach to the commercialization of art. He studied art at Düsseldorf Academy and architecture at TU Aachen. After living and working in the Netherlands for many years, he moved to West Berlin in the late 1970s, where he founded the group Büro Berlin with Hermann Pitz and Raimund Kummer.

Rahmann's artistic practice encompassed situational, temporary installations in public spaces as well as graphics, photographs, paintings, and objects made in his studio.
