Nickname: Toos
Toos Mathot is a visual artist, teacher of visual education, art history and art appreciation. She studied painting and drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she also studied M.O. drawing and art history. She followed International Masterclasses in Surface Glazing Techniques at the Academy in Maastricht. She specialized in art appreciation by following the Colloquium Modern Art, Mythology and Philosophy at the Free Academy, the Open University and the HOVO at the VU in Amsterdam.
She specializes in monumental painting and glass art and works on commission for companies and governments. She exhibits regularly in galleries at home and abroad.
About the artist
Catharina Jacoba Maria (Toos) Mathot (born 1951), born in Gouda, the Netherlands, is a Dutch visual artist best known for her work in monumental painting and glass art. She studied painting and drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she also completed her teaching qualifications in drawing and art history. She followed International Masterclasses in Surface Glazing Techniques at the Academy in Maastricht and specialized in art appreciation through the Colloquium Modern Art, Mythology and Philosophy at the Free Academy, the Open University, and the HOVO at the VU in Amsterdam.
Mathot works in lyrical abstraction, with color, light, and layering as central elements in her practice. She works both with oil on canvas and with glass. Her monumental painting and glass art are created on commission for companies and governments, including the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Municipality of The Hague, Aegon, and Bronovo Hospital. In addition to her artistic practice, she has worked as a teacher of visual education, art history, and art appreciation.
Mathot exhibits regularly in galleries in the Netherlands and abroad. She has shown her work at Pulchri Studio in The Hague, the Haagse Kunstkring in The Hague, and Galerie De Twee Pauwen in The Hague. She is a member of the Haagse Kunstkring and is affiliated with Stichting Beeldrecht. Her commissioned works for public institutions and private companies demonstrate her standing as a monumental artist in the Dutch art scene.
