About the artist

Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012), born in Barcelona, Spain, was a Spanish painter, sculptor and art theorist best known for his work in Art Informel and matter painting. A leading figure in postwar European abstraction, Tàpies developed a distinctive visual language that incorporated unconventional materials such as sand, marble dust, clay and found objects into richly textured surfaces. He co-founded the avant-garde group Dau al Set in 1948, helping to reconnect Catalan art with international modernist currents during the cultural climate of Franco-era Spain.

Tàpies's artistic practice centered on the transformation of humble materials into meditative, tactile compositions that blurred the boundaries between painting and sculpture. His canvases often featured symbolic motifs such as crosses, graffiti-like marks, and imprints of everyday objects that invited contemplation on themes of materiality, spirituality, and the human condition. Drawing on influences ranging from Eastern philosophy to Catalan Romanesque art, he created works that were at once deeply personal and universal. His exploration of matter as both physical substance and metaphysical presence aligned him with European contemporaries such as Jean Dubuffet and Alberto Burri, yet his vocabulary remained unmistakably his own.

Throughout his career, Tàpies received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. His work is preserved and promoted through the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, which was established to maintain his artistic ideas and ensure his continued influence on contemporary art discourse. The foundation serves as a center for the study and exhibition of his extensive body of work.
