Otto de Kat was a painter influenced by the Haarlem School and Matisse's Fauvism He trained at the School voor Kunstambachten in Haarlem, the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (now Rietveld Academy) and at the ecole des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
De Kat mainly created figures in interiors, portraits and landscapes in a style characteristic of him. He was also a teacher at the Rijksacademie and founder of the Dutch Watercolourists' Circle.
Otto de Kat also produced two covers for the well-known magazine De Wendingen in 1927 and 1931.
Otto de Kat's work can be found in many museum, company and private collections, including the National Collection.
About the artist
Otto B. de Kat (1907–1995), born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, was a Dutch painter, watercolourist, and draughtsman best known for his work influenced by the Haarlem School and Matisse's Fauvism. He trained at the School voor Kunstambachten in Haarlem, the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
De Kat mainly created figures in interiors, portraits, and landscapes in a style characteristic of him. His artistic approach drew on the traditions of the Haarlem School while incorporating the bold colour sensibilities of Fauvism. Throughout his career, he worked across multiple media, producing paintings, watercolours, and drawings. He also produced two covers for the magazine De Wendingen in 1927 and 1931.
De Kat was a teacher at the Rijksacademie and founder of the Dutch Watercolourists' Circle. His work can be found in many museum, company, and private collections, including the National Collection. He exhibited widely during his lifetime, and his contributions to Dutch art are preserved in numerous public and private holdings.
