About the artist

Gerhard Richter (born 1932), born in Germany, is a German artist best known for his work across multiple media including abstract and photorealistic painting, photography, and glass. He co-founded Capitalist Realism in 1963 alongside Sigmar Polke, Konrad Lueg, and Manfred Kuttner, a movement considered the German response to Pop Art. His practice defies categorization, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction throughout his career.

Richter's artistic practice encompasses diverse techniques and approaches. His photorealistic paintings are based on found photographs, often blurred to question the nature of representation and memory. His abstract works employ squeegee techniques, layering and scraping paint to create complex surfaces. He also works with photography and has created significant glass installations. This deliberate oscillation between opposing modes of image-making challenges conventional distinctions between abstraction and representation.

Richter represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1972 and participated in Documenta in Kassel multiple times between 1972 and 1992. A major retrospective, "Gerhard Richter: Forty Years of Painting," was organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2002. His work is held in major public collections including MoMA, Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Several of his works have achieved record auction prices, establishing him among the most commercially successful contemporary artists.
