About the artist

Tom Slaughter (1955–2014), born in the United States, was an American artist best known for his playful prints, paintings, and designs. He illustrated 11 children's books including Boat Works and Do You Know Which Ones will Grow?, which was named a 2011 Notable American Library Association book of the year. He worked as a printmaker in collaboration with Durham Press for 25 years.

Slaughter's work is characterized by simplified, bold forms and a palette of bright, primary colors. His artistic practice drew on influences from Henri Matisse, Stuart Davis, and Keith Haring. His background as a graphic designer and commercial illustrator informed his visual language in fine art. For more than 20 years, he served as a visiting artist and critic at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

His editions are included in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Library of Congress in Washington D.C. His work has been the subject of over 30 solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Vancouver, Germany, and Japan, including shows at Tatistcheff & Co., Voges & Deisen in Frankfurt, and Gallery 360 Degrees in Tokyo.
