The mid-1920s had been a period of experimentation for expatriate New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins. Having spent 1924 painting in the south of France, Hodgkins moved to Manchester for two years. For part of that time, she was employed as a designer at the Calico Printing Company who sent her to Paris in 1925 to glean the latest in fashion displayed at the L' Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. French painting and design remained a strong influence in Hodgkins' work. Shining Waters belongs to a group of pictures produced by the artist whilst visiting St Tropez in the south of France during 1931. Hodgkins spent five months at St Tropez from April-August, having visited Martigues from February-April, where she painted alongside fellow New Zealand artist Maude Burge. During this time she completed a number of still life's, some of which were incorporated into the hot Mediterranean landscape and images of people going about their daily lives. There is a serene quality to the present work as we look out over the beach to a calm sea with glistening blue water. The ochre palette employed by Hodgkins with its red and brown tones is reflective of the ploughed earth around her and can be seen in other works from the period.
