Footnotes: Provenance The Artist's estate, from whom acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. Exhibited Hadleigh, Old School, Come into the Garden Maud: Joan Warburton (1920-1996), 3-19 April 2026 Born in Edinburgh in 1920 and raised in England, Joan Warburton studied art in Brussels before attending the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham from 1937 to 1940, where she was taught by Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines. During the Second World War she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service, subsequently working in an armaments factory and as a Red Cross ambulance driver. After the war she settled in London, where she established a successful career as a painter. She held solo exhibitions at the Weekend Gallery in 1948 and Foyles Gallery in 1959, and exhibited widely in group exhibitions, including at the Royal Academy, the Leicester Galleries and with the Women's International Art Club.
