Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, U.K. Born in Warsaw in 1907, Franciszka Themerson trained as a painter at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Art, graduating with distinction in 1931. She moved to London in 1940, where she remained for the rest of her life and became an important figure in the city's post-war avant-garde. Her first solo exhibition of paintings and drawings was held at Gallery One in 1957, followed by a retrospective at the Drian Galleries in 1963, and she continued to exhibit widely in Britain and internationally. Her distinctive, playful and often surreal visual language established her as a significant presence in London's art scene, and her work is now represented in major British collections including Tate, the British Museum and the Arts Council of Great Britain.
