Filmed largely on location at Martha's Vineyard in 1974, "Jaws" became the first major motion picture shot on the open ocean, where frequent mechanical shark failures led director Steven Spielberg to suggest the creature's presence rather than show it, intensifying suspense with John Williams's iconic minimalist score. A landmark film, it launched the summer blockbuster era, won Oscars for score and editing, and held the box-office record until "Star Wars: A New Hope," together defining the modern high-concept summer release.
