THE RAGGEDY ANN DOLL AND TEACUP PRINT TABLECLOTH FROM THE 'GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN' MUSIC VIDEO 1983 height of doll 16in Footnotes: When Cyndi Lauper's breakout hit 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' was released in 1983, it was accompanied by a music video that was a true community effort to create. Shot in the Lower East Side with borrowed video equipment and a largely volunteer cast, the music video cost less than $35,000 to make. Cameos include Cyndi's mother, her attorney, her manager David Wolf, her brother Butch, and professional wrestler 'Captain' Lou Albano as Cyndi's father. The music video used a Quantel Mirage computer at Broadway Video to create special effects, the first time the system was used for a music video. Cyndi and her producer created several first-time-ever computer-generated images that mirrored the bubbly instrumentals of the song. The most iconic scene with this technique is Cyndi dancing with her strait-laced lawyer, leading the entire cast in a snake-dance through New York streets and ending up in Lauper's bedroom. The video began playing on MTV in October 1983 and would go on to win Best Female Video at the inaugural 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. The lasting love for 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' transcends its dance-able pop sound. Lauper swapped pronouns and various lyrics to change the song from a male perspective about chasing women into a female anthem about autonomy, solidarity, and the importance of women and girls living their lives with freedom and joy. Cyndi's personal doll appeared in the music video, seated atop a dresser in the shot of Cyndi's room. The doll is also pictured in a photoshoot and interview in the April 1984 issue of Life magazine titled 'Cyndi Lauper Spies Success: Rock's Dizzy Diva'. The tablecloth appeared in the music video as the mother character, played by Cyndi's own mother Catrine Gallo, cracks eggs and frets over her daughter. In Cyndi's memoir, she recalls that the tablecloth came from Screaming Mimi's.
