Wills adored the dress so much she kept it for her personal archive. Wills met Lauper in 1980 when she was a customer and later an employee for Screaming Mimi's. When Lauper got her first record deal, she asked Willis to help her with styling. When Lauper worked with Annie Leibowitz for the True Colors photoshoot, Wills knew exactly what to use. The dress also featured in the True Colors Japanese tour book.
