When Daryl Roth, a Tony Award-winning producer, the Kinky Boots film at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, she felt that the story had the heart and soul to be a musical, and in 2010, a creative team was assembled with Harvey Fierstein, and Cyndi Lauper as the writer for the musical numbers. Following the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father in the north of England and forms a partnership with a cabaret performer and drag queen named Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots to save the business. The original production of Kinky Boots premiered at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago in October 2012, made its Broadway debut at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in April 2013, and its West End debut in 2015. Kinky Boots was nominated for thirteen Tony nominations and won six, including Best Musical, Best Actor for Billy Porter and Best Score for Cyndi Lauper, her time as a Broadway songwriter. She is the first woman to win alone in that category. The musical's cast album premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums chart and number fifty-one on the Billboard 200 chart. The show also won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.
