Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. C. 1966. Oil on beaverboard. Here is one of Maud's favourite and iconic winter scenes depicting a single passenger in a two-horse sleigh headed for the village or perhaps headed home. Maud painted these scenes by memory but took liberties such as white snow in the valley, with green grass on the hills. The colours she used often depended on her paint supplies. Sometimes she would paint with candlelight, which gave way to vivid colours in the morning light, such as those seen in this serial image. Includes letter of authenticity. Signed, "M. Lewis", lower right. This is the rarest of the Maud Lewis signatures. Board: 12.75" x 14". Purchased at Manuge Gallery in 1982. Includes original purchase receipt from Manuge Gallery.
Condition
Paint retains strong, vibrant colour. The board is straight, and the corners and edges are crisp.
